At a Glance: Sarah Brophy of SMBC Aviation Capital

Jetrader spoke with Sarah Brophy, senior vice president of OEM relations at SMBC Aviation Capital, about who has had the greatest influence on her career, the most challenging part of her profession and more.

Jetrader: What do you like most about the aviation industry?

Sarah Brophy (SB): I trained as a barrister and practiced on the civil litigation side for a few years, and while it was a profession I really enjoyed, it is quite a small community that is steeped in tradition. When I moved into aviation, it really opened my eyes to how big the world is and how much opportunity and diversity there is out there. Specifically on the diversity piece, it has been fantastic for me as a person of color to work in a truly global industry where I get to interact with people from all
over the world.

Jetrader: What is the most challenging part of your profession?

SB: The thing that I find most challenging about our industry is how inextricably interlinked we are with geopolitical events. But on the flip side, that is also one of the things I enjoy the most about our industry. No two days are the same, and you have to stay plugged into what is happening in the world. It is never boring.

Jetrader: Who has had the greatest influence on your career?

SB: Without a doubt, my mum. She has always encouraged me and, at times (particularly in my younger years), has had to remind me to stay the course and get on with things. I have an abiding memory of being in my 20s and meandering a bit career-wise, and she sternly asked me whether I could ever just commit to something. That conversation had the desired effect.

Jetrader: What was your first job?

SB: Working for my mum in her solicitors’ practice at age 16. I worked there through most of my college years, and it taught me a lot.

Jetrader: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the industry?

SB: Be open to opportunities (even if you think it’s not exactly the role you want, etc.). Be the hardest working person you can be, and leave your ego at the door.
