A fuel price driven downturn?
Rising jet fuel prices combined with slowing global GDP could create the first fuel‑price‑driven downturn in commercial aviation in over 30 years. The war in Iran has resulted in fuel prices that have more than doubled from 2025 levels, with recent reductions in utilization on older equipment. The biggest risk is a “perfect storm” of recession and sustained high fuel prices as we saw in the first Gulf War (1990-91). This time, however, Airbus and Boeing deliveries are insulated by massive backlogs. We see the biggest potential challenge as aftermarkets on legacy equipment should the war impact extend beyond a few months.
