SMBC Aviation Capital SMBC Aviation Capital was honored with the 2026 ISTAT Sustainability Award for its leadership in advancing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) research through a groundbreaking partnership with Trinity College Dublin.

Together, the organizations established the Trinity College Dublin Sustainable Aviation Fuel Research Facility within SMBC Aviation Capital's Dublin headquarters, creating a unique collaboration between industry and academia focused on accelerating SAF development and adoption. The facility has since become the operational home of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency's (EASA) EU SAF Clearing House, playing a key role in supporting the evaluation and certification of new sustainable aviation fuels.

Driving Progress Through Collaboration

As one of the world's largest aircraft lessors, SMBC Aviation Capital recognized that addressing aviation's decarbonization challenge would require more than investment alone. By creating a dedicated research facility and bringing together fuel producers, researchers, regulators and industry stakeholders, the company helped establish an important resource for advancing SAF across the aviation ecosystem.

The facility supports the testing and assessment of emerging fuels, helping developers navigate the certification process and bringing promising innovations closer to commercial use. Beyond research, the partnership has contributed to industry studies, knowledge-sharing initiatives and policy discussions aimed at accelerating SAF adoption.

A Lasting Impact on Aviation Sustainability

Rather than taking a traditional approach to sustainability, SMBC Aviation Capital invested in long-term infrastructure designed to create lasting industry impact. The result is a collaborative model that connects scientific research with real-world industry needs while supporting one of aviation's most important pathways toward reducing emissions.

The 2026 ISTAT Sustainability Award recognizes SMBC Aviation Capital's commitment to turning ambition into action and highlights the meaningful role industry partnerships can play in helping shape a more sustainable future for aviation.
